Spider Away!

Autumn is the time of year when our eight legged friends start getting a bit chilly and head into the house. I have no issue with spiders in principle, and am more than happy to share my space with them if they promise to not get in the bath, or in my towels, or in my Wellies, or in my shopping bags and then basically scare the daylights out of me when they come running out! Also I won’t kill them so I then spend the next half hour trying to find them again, catch them in a glass and get them outside – which I am sure would be quite funny to watch. My thinking is that overall its best of they keep out the way so this is a simple essential oil based spray that should keep the spiders at bay!

Spider Away! Ingredients

  • 500ml warm water
  • Spray Bottle
  • 3 squirts Washing up liquid
  • 15 drops Peppermint Oil

Mix all of the above ingredients together starting with the warm water and then spray generously around doors, windows and into corners and crevices. Go around the outside of your house if you can and do the same, concentrate on drains, dark corners and air vents. Spiders (apparently) will avoid Peppermint and strong citrus smells.

Oranges and Lemons

If you don’t have the above ingredients then get a few Oranges or Lemons and cut in half and do the same, concentrating on doors and windows.

Easy Bath Solutions

If like me you have spent many an autumn morning chasing a spider around the bathroom, an easy solution to reduce the number that get into your bath and sink is simply put the plugs in of a night time.

  1. We too don’t kill spiders in my house. I do the same with bees too. We have ant problems starting about now so I am hoping the peppermint works! I heard putting a few drops on some cotton balls and leaving those near places of entry should help too!
